Paths of glory; impressions of war written at and near the front Irvin S 18761944 Cobb 9781171540458 Books

Irvin Cobb was an outstanding New York City newspaper journalist and public speaker during the first four decades of the 20th century. His frank and honest descriptions of his experiences at the front during the earliest months of the war in Belgium, coming as they did prior to the later reports of atrocities - politically generated and admittedly exaggerated as a means of turning the attitudes of the British (and American) public against Germany in a visceral way - are unusually refreshing. Cobb held no bias toward either side but rather seeks only to understand the nature of the War, its two sides, and the reality of the experiences of the armies. Highly recommended.

I'm an European WWI book collector. I bought this accidentally, because I thought it would be the novel "Paths of Glory" by Humphrey Cobb, made famous by Stanley Kubrick's film. If you are a film enthusiast, go to Paths of Glory.

Instead of a novel I found and outstanding travel book about the First World War. Most of that genre are just rubbish and painful to a modern reader. Irvin S. Cobb makes an exception. He is able to analyze the feelings of Belgian and French civilians, Prussian and Bavarian officers and his own feelings too. It is a journey to the mind of a man in the war, too. That makes his book an rare source to the mental history of the war. Cobb is a good and critical journalist, but he doesn't avoid the inevitable moral conclusions about the First World War and the fate of Belgium.
The words Cobb used were delightful in that he had so many to describe people and events.
I really enjoyed this true story it sure gives an insi te into what these people had to go through very very good
This author's unique experience was rendered in prose far beyond what one would expect of an average journalist. Perhaps most striking was the cool, detached poise he maintained in conditions more often life threatening than not. Highly recommended for military history lovers.
Irvin S. Cobb's Paths of Glory should be required reading for everyone everywhere. Justification for war may abound, but it has no beauty, and its destructive roots grow deep and entangle us so we cannot escape its devastating forces.
